Laptop Won't Boot, Is Dead, Has a Blank Screen or Keeps Restarting
Is your laptop not starting properly? Or completely dead?
A laptop that won’t boot, appears completely dead, shows a blank screen or repeatedly crashes can have a number of different causes.
You may have a problem with:
- The charger or power supply
- The charging socket
- The battery
- The laptop’s power circuitry
- The motherboard
- Internal components or connections
If the usual external causes have been ruled out, the fault may be within the laptop itself and could require specialist diagnosis.
A completely dead laptop doesn’t automatically mean that the motherboard needs replacing. We can assess the laptop to establish what has failed and whether a repair is practical.
Laptop won't boot into Windows?
- Getting stuck on the manufacturer’s logo
- Repeatedly restarting
- Getting stuck in a boot loop
- Showing an error message
- Freezing during startup
- Showing a blank screen after powering on
- Failing to find the operating system
These problems can be caused by software or operating-system issues, but they can also indicate problems with the laptop’s storage drive SSD or other hardware.
Laptop turns on but the screen is blank?
- Power lights are on but the screen remains black.
- The laptop appears to start but nothing appears on the display.
- The screen briefly comes on and then goes blank.
- The laptop works with an external display but not its own screen.
- You can hear the laptop running but cannot see anything.
The cause could be the screen, display cable, graphics circuitry, motherboard or another component. Rather than assuming the screen needs replacing, the fault needs to be identified first.
Laptop keeps crashing or freezing?
- Repeated crashes, freezes or unexpected shutdowns shouldn’t simply be ignored.
- The cause could be software-related, overheating, a failing storage drive, memory, power problems.
- It could be a fault with the motherboard or another internal component.
- If the problem continues after normal software troubleshooting, the laptop may require a hardware diagnosis.
If important files are stored on the laptop, avoid repeatedly forcing it to restart if you suspect the storage drive may be failing.
Could it be a motherboard fault?
When a laptop won’t start, it can be tempting to buy anew part and hope it solves the problem. Unfortunately, replacing parts without first identifying the cause can become expensive very quickly. Some symptoms can be caused by a motherboard fault. This doesn’t automatically mean the whole board needs replacing. Depending on the cause, a board-level repair may be possible.
Tell us what happens when you press the power button, what you can see or hear, and anything that happened immediately before the fault appeared. We’ll help determine the next step and whether the laptop can be repaired.
