Laptop Power & Charging Problems

Laptop won't turn on or charge?

A laptop that won’t power on doesn’t necessarily need a new battery. There are several possible causes that are often easy to repair, including the charger, charging socket, battery, power circuitry or motherboard.

Common symptoms include:

  • The laptop is completely dead.
  • There are no charging or power lights.
  • The laptop won’t charge.
  • The charger isn’t recognised.
  • The laptop only works when connected to the charger.
  • The laptop switches off unexpectedly.
  • The laptop has stopped working after a power-related fault.

Before replacing parts, it’s important to identify where the problem is coming from. Replacing a battery or charger without confirming the fault can result in unnecessary expense.

When the fault is on the motherboard

If the charger, battery and external connections are working correctly, the problem may be within the laptop’s power management or charging circuitry on the motherboard.

Although these faults require a more specialist approach they can actually be some of the easiest faults to repair at board level.

If your laptop is completely dead, won’t charge or has developed a power-related fault, we can help identify the likely cause and advise on the most appropriate solution. We recommend not to buy replacement parts before you know what has failed and get the fault diagnosed first.

“Excellent through out – he kept me informed and even gave me an explanation of what needed to be done before sending out his quote. Through some extra digging he did off his own back he managed to actually save me money in the end and had my completely dead machine back up and alive within a couple of weeks – couldn’t recommend him enough.”
